Northern Gannet

Morus bassanus

The Northern Gannet is a seabird of considerable dimensions and the largest observed in Portuguese waters. Easily recognizable for its narrow long wings, slender sharp beak and overall black plumage with a touch of light yellow on the head and a black wingtip. The juveniles are dark, having a white-spotted brownish color, progressively changing to the white plumage when adult. Gannets are abundant along the whole Portuguese mainland coast and are frequently observed from land throughout the year.
