Lesser Black-backed Gull

Larus fuscus

The Lesser Black-backed Gull, the most common species of gulls, is a constant presence on the Portuguese coast, particularly during winter time. The adults show a typical gull plumage: dark grey dorsal side, white ventral area and head, pale-yellow legs and yellow beak with a red or black spot near the tip of the lower mandible. The juveniles have brown and white spotted plumage, and are frequently mistaken for juveniles of Yellow-legged gulls.
